Winging It in New Caledonia: Beautiful Water, Fresh OJ & A Lesson Learned

Not every port ends up being a highlight, and that’s okay. Travel is about discovery, even when that discovery is learning what not to do next time. During our Disney Cruise stop in Nouméa, New Caledonia, we had no solid plans and decided to just see where the day took us. Sometimes that spontaneity pays off. This time… it didn’t exactly.

A Beach Stop With Pretty Views & Painful Sand
We started our morning by hopping into one of the open-air taxis waiting near the cruise port. These colorful little vehicles are a fun way to get around, and the drivers often have recommendations if you don’t have an itinerary. Ours took us to Plage de la Baie des Citrons, a small beach just outside of town.
The water? Absolutely beautiful — clear and sparkling, with those dreamy turquoise hues that instantly make you want to dive in. But the beach itself was tiny, and the sand was so rocky and coarse that even walking barefoot was tough. We stayed just long enough to snap a few pictures and soak in the view before deciding to head back into town in search of breakfast.

Orange Juice Worth Writing Home About
We stumbled across a small open-air café, the kind of place that looks like it’s run by locals and loved by them, too. Unfortunately, they weren’t serving food yet, but we decided to grab drinks and relax for a bit.
My husband ordered an orange juice, and I’m not exaggerating when I say: he talked about it for the rest of the trip. Freshly squeezed, cold, and full of natural sweetness, it was hands-down the best OJ he’s ever had. One of those tiny, unexpected joys that make a slow morning a little sweeter.
What I’d Do Differently Next Time
We spent a bit of time walking around the town afterward, but honestly? There wasn’t much else to do. It was a quiet day, and without a plan or excursion, we felt like we were just killing time. If I could go back, I’d definitely book something in advance, a guided tour, a boat trip, maybe a visit to one of the surrounding islands. Winging it works in some places, but in Nouméa, it left us feeling a little underwhelmed.
While I probably won’t be making a return trip a priority, if we ever dock here again, I’ll give it another shot, with a proper plan in hand.
