After days of sea breeze and sunshine aboard our Disney Cruise, we pulled into San Juan, Puerto Rico, not quite sure what to expect, but what we got was a vibrant mix of history, color, and charm that felt like stepping into another era. For this port stop, we booked the Old San Juan, Condado, and Fort Morro Excursion, and it turned out to be the perfect introduction to this rich and fascinating city.

A Drive Through Time: From El Capitolio to Condado

Our day began with a warm welcome from our local guide and a comfortable ride in an accessible van that whisked us through the heart of San Juan. This wasn’t your typical tourist loop. Our guide was passionate, knowledgeable, and with every stop, he shared interesting facts that brought the city to life.

We passed the breathtaking El Capitolio, with its neoclassical architecture and marble columns, and cruised by the Casa Olimpica, a nod to Puerto Rico’s Olympic athletes and national pride. Then we rolled through the Condado District, modern, sleek, and buzzing even in the morning hours. Lined with luxury hotels, casinos, and beachside restaurants, it felt like Miami with a Puerto Rican twist.

We made a quick stop at Ventana Del Mar, which translates to “window to the sea.” And that’s exactly what it was, a peaceful oceanfront park with sweeping views of the Atlantic, framed by palm trees and salty breeze. It was a perfect photo op and a calm moment before diving into the deeper layers of the city’s past.

A Fortress of History: Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Our next stop was the crown jewel of the excursion. An exterior visit to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, affectionately known as El Morro. Even from the outside, this nearly 500-year-old fortress is nothing short of majestic. Perched on the edge of the Old San Juan islet, El Morro stands as a symbol of Puerto Rico’s resilience and strategic importance throughout history.

Our guide walked us through the fort’s legacy, from its Spanish roots to its later role under U.S. control, while we snapped photos against the backdrop of rolling green lawns, ancient stone walls, and the endless blue of the ocean.

And when I say the views were stunning, I mean it. I still dream about them. The contrast of the deep blue water against the rugged stone, the wide open sky, and the historical weight of the moment made every photo feel surreal. Honestly, it felt like I was posing for a travel magazine spread, camera-ready without even trying. That’s how striking it all was. Just being there, soaking in the energy and beauty of it, was one of those you-had-to-be-there moments.

Strolling the Streets of Old San Juan

The final part of the day brought us to Paseo De La Princesa, a picturesque promenade that runs along the base of the city’s old fortress walls. We took a slow stroll down the boulevard, flanked by statues, fountains, and leafy trees, with locals selling handmade art and crafts along the way.

There was something magical about this stretch, the way the stone walls met the sea, the faint sounds of music drifting from side streets, and the blend of old-world beauty and modern island life. We were given time to wander at our own pace, popping into boutiques, art galleries, and charming little shops tucked into centuries-old buildings.

Final Thoughts on San Juan

We barely scratched the surface of what San Juan has to offer, but in just a few hours, the city left a deep impression. It was colorful, cultured, and full of contrasts, old and new, polished and raw, peaceful and buzzing all at once.

Whether you’re a history buff, a photo lover, or someone who just wants to stroll through a city that’s bursting with personality, San Juan is worth stepping off the ship for, and then some.
