From Sea to Serenity: Finding Disney Magic at Aulani After 14 Days at Sea

After two unforgettable (and let’s be real, slightly exhausting) weeks at sea on our Disney Cruise, we wrapped up our journey with a few nights at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai‘i, and the second we stepped onto the property, I felt something I hadn’t expected: we were home.

Sure, it wasn’t Orlando. There were no castle spires in the distance or monorail whooshing overhead. But somehow, Aulani managed to carry that same Disney warmth, wrapped in tropical paradise energy, and infused with just enough pixie dust to make every second feel magical.

Check-In Vibes & Balcony Bliss

From the moment we arrived, we were met with warm greetings from Disney Cast Members, island breezes, and the soft scent of salty sea breeze in the air. We were lucky enough to get our room almost immediately, which, after 14 days at sea, felt like the ultimate blessing.

We stayed in a standard room, and unless you’re traveling with a larger group or need the extra space, I honestly don’t think you need an upgrade. It was just my husband and me, and the room was perfect. We had two queen beds as that was all that was available, though other layouts include one king bed and a sleeper sofa, and plenty of space!

Best of all? The private balcony. I spent more time out there than I expected, just soaking in the view. Our room overlooked the entire resort, palm trees swaying, families splashing in the pool, and the ocean shimmering in the distance. It truly felt like something out of a movie.

First Stop: Açaí & A Piña Colada (Obviously)

Once we dropped off our bags, we did what any self-respecting vacationer would do: found the nearest bar. I grabbed a piña colada and one of the most incredible açaí bowls I’ve ever had in my life.

It was topped with fresh mango, banana, pineapple, and toasted coconut, and when I tell you I still dream about it, I’m not kidding. Creamy, refreshing, naturally sweet, and balanced with tropical crunch. It set the tone for the rest of the trip.

Dinner at Makahiki – The Bounty of the Islands

After a much-needed midday nap, we headed to Makahiki for dinner. The setting was vibrant and breezy, with open-air seating and a menu that perfectly blends local ingredients with international flavors. This was a three-course prix fixe dinner, and everything from start to finish was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented.

To start, my husband chose the Roasted Tomato Soup made with Hamakua tomatoes, basil, and a sourdough fontina melt on the side. The soup was creamy and flavorful, and the fontina melt was far more exciting than your typical bread or crouton.

I ordered the Caesar Salad, and while a Caesar might seem basic, this one stood out. The lettuce was incredibly fresh, the house-made dressing was bold and balanced, and the herbed croutons were crisp without overpowering.

For our entrées, my husband had the 14-oz Prime Rib, served with steak frites, roasted asparagus, Hamakua mushrooms, au jus, and horseradish cream. It was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful, with no notes.

I ordered the House-Smoked Atlantic Salmon, mashed potatoes, roasted asparagus, maitake mushrooms, and a lemon-dill cream. I requested it well done (yes, I know), and it was cooked to perfection. Moist, flaky, and packed with flavor. The potatoes were smooth and creamy, and the asparagus had just the right crunch.

For dessert, we both had the Dulce de Leche Cheesecake. As a cheesecake fanatic, I found the flavor absolutely divine. The texture could’ve been slightly creamier, but overall, it was a rich and satisfying end to a stellar meal.

Evening Drinks at The ‘Ōlelo Room

After dinner, we weren’t quite ready to call it a night, so we made our way to The ‘Ōlelo Room, one of Aulani’s most unique lounge spaces. It was definitely busy, but we got lucky and managed to grab a small table near the edge of the patio, and I’m so glad we did.

The atmosphere was vibrant yet relaxed, with live music floating through the warm night air and a view overlooking the softly lit resort grounds. The glow of the tiki torches, the sound of Hawaiian melodies, and the sound of happy guests created the perfect post-dinner vibe.

The lounge does offer an appetizer menu, including sushi, small plates, and a few desserts, but we skipped ordering since we were still full from our three-course dinner. However, the table next to us ordered several sushi rolls and couldn't stop raving about how fresh and flavorful they were. If we weren’t still in a food coma, we probably would’ve joined them.

Sipping drinks under the stars with that view and that music, it was one of those moments you wish you could bottle up and revisit whenever life gets too loud.

Aloha Mornings & Character Magic

The next morning, we headed back to Makahiki, this time for their character breakfast, and it did not disappoint. The setting was lively with music, laughter, and a touch of Disney whimsy, as Goofy, Max, Pluto, and Mickey made the rounds.

We began with a round of Malasadas — Hawaii’s beloved Portuguese-style sugar donuts, that were so airy and pillowy soft, nothing like the dense doughnuts back on the East Coast. We also had a plate of fresh seasonal fruit, and let’s just say: fruit in Hawai‘i hits different. Sweet, juicy, and sunshine-kissed.

We were also brought a yogurt parfait of some kind (not listed on the menu), and it completely blew me away. It tasted more like custard than yogurt... rich, smooth, and lightly sweet. If I could recreate it at home, I’d be eating it every morning.

To drink, I went for a mimosa with pineapple juice, made the Kelly way, just a tiny drop of juice. If you know, you know. It was everything I wanted it to be.

For entrées, I ordered the Punaluʻu Sweet Bread French Toast with sweet cream cheese, seasonal berries, and warm Vermont maple syrup. Yes, I was already feeling a little bloated from carbs and cocktails, but this was vacation, and I had zero regrets. It was soft, rich, and indulgent without being too heavy, truly a standout breakfast.

My husband kept it classic with eggs and bacon, and while he said it wasn’t anything earth-shattering, it was solid and satisfying, exactly what he wanted.

Mickey Shaved Ice, Balcony Wine & Sunset Beach Vibes

Our second full day at Aulani was all about slow wandering and simple pleasures, which, honestly, might be the best way to experience the resort.

We wandered through the pathways and stopped for a mid-morning treat with an iconic Mickey-shaped shaved ice. And yes, it was exactly as good as you’d expect. Soft, sweet, and almost too cute to eat. (Almost.) Shortly after, we grabbed a Dole Whip, because how could you not? It was perfectly creamy and tangy, a tropical staple that never disappoints.

After our sugar-fueled stroll, we made our way back to the room for some downtime. I kicked back on the balcony with a glass of wine, completely content watching the resort guests below and the ocean stretch out in the distance. It’s rare to feel that peaceful and present, and this was one of those moments I’ll mentally revisit over and over.

As the sun began to set, we headed down to the beach. The colors across the sky, deep coral, gold, and lavender, melting into the ocean, were unreal. There’s just something about a Hawaiian sunset that makes you stop in your tracks and take a deep breath.

Off-Property Dinner & Dessert Done Right

Later that evening, we decided to venture off property for dinner. We walked across the street to a local bar, the name escapes me, which probably says enough. It was casual, unremarkable, but it filled the space for a quick bite.

Back at the resort, we stocked up on a few drinks for the room, and, no surprise here, I ordered another açaí bowl, this time for dessert. This one came topped with strawberries, blueberries, banana, toasted coconut, and a drizzle of Nutella. Basically dessert disguised as a health food. No regrets.

Soaking in Our Final Day

On our last day, we kept it low-key and stayed on property to soak in every last minute. We spent the morning dipping in and out of the pool, letting the sunshine and warm water work their magic. Then we made our way to Off the Hook, one of Aulani’s casual poolside bars, and posted up for a while with drinks in hand, people-watching and savoring the mellow rhythm of Hawaiian vacation life.

We ended the day with a quick service dinner back in the room, which was simple yet satisfying. I had (you guessed it) another açaí bowl, and Matt went with a pizza. For the record, he said it was “fine,” but as Jersey natives, our pizza standards are very high. Let’s just say it did the job, but wouldn’t make our highlight reel.

Aulani: Home, But Different

Aulani might be thousands of miles from Orlando, but it gave me that same unmistakable Disney feeling, welcoming, magical, and familiar. The difference? Instead of castles and fireworks, you’re surrounded by crashing waves, lush green mountains, and a horizon that feels infinite.

We didn’t get to do everything I had hoped, mostly because, after 14 days at sea, we were running on fumes. There were still pools we didn’t float in, paths we didn’t explore, and I never quite made it around the full lazy river loop the way I planned. But honestly? I still had the time of my life.

Aulani offered exactly what we needed in that moment: rest, beauty, Disney magic, and unforgettable bites. And now that I know how special it is, I’ll definitely be back, but this time with a little more energy and a full day dedicated to doing nothing but drifting through the lazy river and soaking up paradise.
