If you’ve ever dreamed of locking eyes with a humpback whale or dining in a historic Alaskan saloon, Juneau is the place where those dreams come true. Our day in Alaska’s capital city was packed with unforgettable wildlife encounters, nature trails, and quirky local charm, and it’s one of those stops I’ll be talking about forever.

Whale Watching in Juneau: A Dream Come True

First stop: the ocean. We boarded our whale-watching tour, and within minutes, we saw humpback whales, orcas, seals, and sea lions, all putting on a show as if they were scheduled. A few whales even came up incredibly close to our boat, which had everyone gasping and scrambling for their cameras, though, to be honest, I only took a few photos. I wanted to soak up every second without a lens in front of my face.

Our tour guide was amazing, full of fun facts and local knowledge, and he knew exactly where to go for the best chances at sightings. His timing was perfect, getting us as close as possible without disturbing the wildlife, and sharing the kind of commentary that made you fall even more in love with Alaska.

I have to give credit where credit’s due. Thank you, Dory, for teaching me how to speak whale. As a lifelong Disney fan, I never imagined that one day I’d actually be channeling my inner blue tang while surrounded by humpbacks and orcas in the wild waters of Juneau, Alaska. While I didn’t actually try to call to them in Dory’s signature slow-mo voice (okay, maybe once), just being that close to these gentle giants felt like something straight out of a Pixar dream.

Douglas Island Rainforest Hike: A Peaceful Pause

After our bucket-list morning at sea, we made our way to Douglas Island for a short, scenic hike along the rainforest trailhead. This spot is often used for nature education by local school kids, and while it wasn’t the most thrilling stop of the day, it was still a lovely change of pace.

We walked beneath the lush forest canopy, learning how the local environment provides shelter, food, and even natural medicine. It was quiet, peaceful, and a great way to stretch our legs before heading back into town.

Lunch (and a Show) at Red Dog Saloon

No visit to Juneau is complete without stepping through the swinging doors of the Red Dog Saloon, and I mean that literally. This place is packed with personality and history, and the moment you walk in and your feet hit the sawdust-covered floors, you know you’re in for a good time.

Founded during the mining boom and once just a tent on the beach, Red Dog has grown into a full-blown landmark, offering cold drinks, hearty food, and a hearty dose of Wild West vibes. The live music playing during lunch added so much to the atmosphere — like something out of a saloon scene in a movie.

We split a pizza, which was solid (not groundbreaking, but it hit the spot), but what stole the show? The Reindeer Shot. A delightful mix of Kahlúa, Baileys, and peppermint schnapps, it tasted like Christmas in your mouth, and if we’re being honest, it totally beat the famous Duck Fart shot we tried in Skagway.

Final Thoughts: Juneau Is a Must for Wildlife & Weirdness

Juneau gave me one of the most memorable wildlife moments of my life, a dose of peaceful nature, and a saloon experience I’ll never forget. Whether you're here for the whales, the walks, or the whiskey, this city delivers.

So here’s to Dory, speaking whale, reindeer farts, and never forgetting to just keep soaking in the moments.
